ROBBIE AGNEW: From Jockey to Trainer

G’day Robbie, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where did you grow up, and what led you to Port Macquarie?

I’m originally from Sydney and grew up in the eastern suburbs. Racing runs in the family—my Granddad was a jockey, my Dad was a jockey, so it was only natural that I followed in their footsteps. A rugby career was never on the cards! I started my apprenticeship in Ballina, but when the opportunity came up to finish it in Port Macquarie, I jumped at the chance. Being closer to friends and family in Sydney was a big drawcard. That was back in 2007, and I’ve called Port home ever since.

Port has a way of keeping people here! You’ve made the jump (pun intended!) from jockey to trainer these days. What does that look like for you?

That’s right! These days, I run Robbie Agnew Racing out of the Port Macquarie Race Club, with about 10 horses in training at the moment. Most of the work is done early in the morning with my team, owners, friends, and locals, but after some early success, plenty of new owners are jumping on board. We buy two or three new yearlings each year, so there are always fresh opportunities for people to get involved.

It’s an exciting time for racing in Port Macquarie. Racing NSW has invested millions into the track, the Port Macquarie Cup is going from strength to strength, and the Country Championships was a massive success. The whole racing community here is thriving, and it’s great to be a part of it.

Got any hot tips for us?

A couple of my best horses are currently in the paddock, but once they come back from a spell, they’ll be heading to Sydney to race. Keep an eye out for Show Me How and Bowie The Builder—both have a ton of promise.

Many people know you from off the track too. What other areas of the community do you take part in?

We love giving back to the community, so Robbie Agnew Racing proudly sponsors the Macquarie Cricket Club, Port Macquarie Oztag, and the Port City Breakers. This year is extra special for my wife, Alana, and I because our son, Joey, is starting his first season with the Breakers Under 6s. We’ve always supported the club, but watching Joey run out onto the field will be a proud moment.

I’m also still playing in the local Oztag competition. I might be nearing retirement age, but I’m not hanging up the boots just yet!

Settlers Inn is your local. What’s the best thing on the menu?

Easy! A schooner of ice-cold Carlton Dry 3.5, and if I had to pick a meal, you can’t go past a rare steak with chips only. Simple, classic, and always a winner.
